Nutrition for Aging Eyes

Older adults are prone to developing age-related eye diseases, such as cataracts and macular degeneration. By making some nutritional changes, aging individuals can help top prevent some eye problems. By having a healthy diet, you can avoid some of these eye problems. There are some other things that you can do as well to reduce the chances of developing issues with the eyes as you age, including:

·       Avoiding exposure to intense ultraviolet light

·       Quitting smoking

·       Getting periodic eye exams

Diet and Healthy Eyes

The foods you eat on a daily basis can have an effect on eye health. When you have a diet that is high in sugar and saturated fats, you will increase your risk of eye disease. Adding fresh fruits and vegetables to your diet can reduce your chances of eye disease. Studies have shown that diets rich in lutein, omega-3-fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and healthy proteins will help to reduce eye problems associated with aging.

Guidelines for Eye Health and Diet

By having a nutritious diet, you can effectively reduce your chances of developing age-related eye problems. Some diet guidelines can be of use.

1.     Eat whole grains and cereals. At least half of the daily grains ingested should be 100 percent whole grains.

2.     Choose foods with healthy fats, such as flaxseed oil, walnuts and canola oil.

3.     Choose good sources of protein, including lean meat, fish and eggs.

4.     Avoid sodium as much as possible. High sodium levels have been linked to the development of cataracts.

5.     Stay hydrated and choose low-fat dairy products. Fruit juices should be made with all fruit and opt for decaffeinated beverages.

Eye Vitamins

When you successfully adjust your diet to include healthy foods, you can add some vitamins and supplements to help prevent eye disease. To avoid macular degeneration, include supplements of beta carotene, vitamin E and C and zinc. Omega-3-fatty acids have been shown to reduce the risks of cataracts. Taking added vitamins and supplements can greatly improve your chances of maintaining healthy vision and avoiding age-related eye diseases.
