Top Causes of Eye Injuries
Each year, thousands of people suffer an injury to their eyes. These injuries can often be avoided by being aware of what the common causes of eye injuries are and taking necessary precautions. Wearing safety glasses is the best way to prevent an injury to the eye. Laser pointers are popular products that are used for a variety of purposes. Some people buy them just to play with a pet. When the laser shines in the eye, it can cause a temporary loss of vision and can cause damage to the retina. This damage is usually permanent. Another common cause of eye injuries is corks from wine or champagne bottles. During a celebration, sustaining an eye injury is probably never considered. However, when that cork flies, it could do some serious damage to the eye. It is possible to rupture the eyeball or detach the retina. Both of these can cause blindness. This accident is more common with champagne bottles that have not been chilled because the cork comes out of the bottle with more force. Fireworks are a cause of eye injuries in many people. In 2009, the US reported 1,600 eye injuries from fireworks. Paintball is another leading cause of injuries to the eyes. If players are not wearing protective equipment, they run a high risk of losing their vision. Paint pellets can travel as fast as 180 mph and can cause various injuries, including detached retinas, glaucoma, orbital blowout and traumatic cataracts. Image
