What you need to know about frames and lenses

There is more than meets the eye when comparing reading glasses.

Although two reading glasses may look similar, there can be differences in the frames and lenses.

Frames - It's all material

Metal Frames
All metal frames offered at Readerwear are corrosion resistant and hypoallergenic.  Metal frame materials are Nickel/Silver, Monel, and Stainless Steel.  Stainless Steel frames, although more expensive, are stronger, lighter, and allow an element of flexibility.

Plastic Frames
Particularly popular today are frames made from coloured plastics.  There are two types of plastic frames, laminate frames made from layers of cellulose acetate, or injected molded frames made from propionate.  A lamiante frame allows for colourful two-tone designs, intricate curves, and a more polished finish.

Spring Temples
Spring temples allow the frame to become more flexible and reduce the stress put on the temple.  This will keep your frames from becoming bent or bowed.

Aspheric Lenses - Clearly Better

Thanks to state-of-the art optical technology, aspheric lenses offer three major benefits.

They are Lighter
Aspheric lenses usually weigh about 25% less than normal lenses.  This means that readers with aspheric lenses are more comfortable to wear.

They are Thinner
Aspheric lenses are thinner than normal lenses.  This allows for better cosmetic appearance by not magnifying your eye from the outside.

Less Distortions
Individuals who require strong prescriptions find that they have a small degree of distortion.  Although this is not completely removed with aspheric lenses, the distortions are greatly reduced.

Frame Care Tips

Gently remove your glasses from your face with both hands.  This will prevent the frame from becoming stretched out of shape.

Wearing reading glasses on the top of your head will distort their shape and place stress on the temples and lenses.

Always use a case for your readers.  This will keep the frames from becoming bent.

Keep the temple screws tight.  Over time the screws that attach the temples will become loose.  When you notice this, gently tighten the screws before they fall out completely.

Lens Cleaning and Care

Keeping the lenses of your readers clean will not only help you see better, it will also keep your lenses scratch free.

The best way to clean your lenses is with a soft micro-fiber cloth and cleaning solution.  This allows dirt and residue to be lifted off the lens during cleaning.

You should avoid using the following to clean your lenses:

  • Clothing - fine particles of dirt caught in clothing can scratch lenses
  • Dish Soap - today's dish soaps are powerful enough to slowly disintegrate lens coatings
  • Glass Cleaners - these are highly corrosive and will damage your lenses
  • Tissue/Paper Products - paper can grind dust and fiber into a lens, leaving scratches
  • Alcohol - though used sparingly in lens grinding, repeated use causes damage.
